The back ground of Lopburi was developed during the Dvaravati period (6th – 10th Century), when it was known as Lavo. It is also mixed with an influence and evidence of Khmer empire during 11th – 13th century. The glory days of Lopburi was as a stronghold of the Ayutthaya Empire; King Narai the Great (1657–1688 AD) made Lopburi as the second capital, hosting many foreign dignitaries in the town. An array of palaces and temples from the Khmer and Ayutthaya empires still stand, though in various states of decay.
